Irish Hockey League Sat 1st May.
Lisnagarvey 6 Cork Church of Ireland 3
Lisnagarvey secured their place in the I.H.L. final weekend with an excellent 6-3 win over visitors Cork Church of Ireland. The win took them to the top of their section and means they avoid both Pembroke and Glenanne at the semi final stage in Dublin on 15th May. Instead they play Corinthians in the first semi final and must have a good chance of proceeding to the final.
Saturday's game against Cork c of I was somewhat straightforward as Garvey gave their visitors little chance to settle and found themselves a goal ahead in just two minutes. Jason Lynch transferred the ball to Mark Daniel who laid it on a plate for Timmy Cockram who scored without any resistance.
Cork did cause Garvey a problem in the 8th minute when Garvey keeper Davey Williamson had to make a good save from Harvey and then Mark Daniel put his shot past the post when he really should have scored in the 12th minute.
Mark Raphael had to take a Cork shot off the goal line in the 14th minute, but five minutes later Garvey scored their second goal. It came from a Glen Whitten deflection which went to Mark Daniel, who then only had to slip the ball to the waiting Cockram for him to score another simple goal.
Two goals ahead at the end of the first quarter, Garvey were shaken when Cork got into their act. John Jermyn struck the upright after a defensive error and then Nick Burns also hit the post.
Garvey rode the difficult period and came back to create two chances through Mark Daniel and Peter MacDonnell but it was Cork who struck back in the last minute of the first half. They forced their second penalty corner and the brilliant John Jermyn gave Davey Williamson no chance with a powerful drag flick and at the interval, Cork had got themselves back into the game with Garvey holding just a slender one goal advantage.
Timmy Cockram started the second half with a great positive attitude when first he struck a reverse shot past the post and in the 38nd minute he took a good pass from Johnny Bell and beat Cork keeper Billy Lynch with a well placed reverse shot from
the centre of the circle.
Peter MacDonnell sealed the game for his team with Garvey's fourth goal in the 42nd minute. He dribbled the ball past a number of Cork defenders before finding the way past Lynch with a reverse stick shot.
Garvey were now in complete control of a strangely quiet Cork side and in the 44th minute they put the seal on the game with a fifth goal. Mark Daniel made ground down the left wing before a Timmy Cockram deflection set Peter MacDonnell up for his second goal, from short range at the right hand post.
John Jermyn gave Cork a flickering hope when he scored his second penalty corner into the top left hand corner of the Garvey net and at the three quarter point in the game, Garvey led by 5 goals to 2.
Stephen Arbuthnot cleared a Cork shot off the goal line before Jermyn added his third penalty corner drag flick, this time low to Williamson's left but there was enough time for Garvey to end their very successful afternoon with a sixth goal when Timmy Cockram made the best of a cork defensive mistake to score his 4ths goal and give his team a resounding 6-3 win.
Meanwhile, Garvey still have to qualify for next seasons I.H.L. and to do that they have to travel to Dublin again this weekend. They play two games in the ‘wild card’ play offs, first they take on Dublin Y.M.C.A. on Friday evening at Pembroke Wanderers ground at Serpentine Road at 8.15 and then they face the weakest team in the group, Bandon from Cork at 2.00 on Saturday at Three Rock Rovers ground at Grange Road. Both games will be no ‘push over’ but with Garvey's good form they should be able to handle both teams and qualify. They are hampered by a few of their schoolboys studying for exams but hopefully the teams they put on the pitch will be strong enough to win the tournament.
The Garvey squad is as follows; D.Williamson, B.Waring,J.Bell, P.Martin, S.Arbuthnot, M.Robinson, J.Lynch, P.MacDonnell, G.Whitten, M.Raphael, M.Daniel,
T.Cockram, S.McNiece, J.Gray[capt], S.Hunter, I.Harbinson, R.Arneill, G.Thompson.
