Garvey U12 Boys win the Ulster Cup

04 May 2009

The Garvey U12 team completed their season yesterday with a convincing performance in the U12 Cup finals day. In a series of 10 matches the boys won 9, drew 1 and didn’t concede a single goal. Garvey started slowly with a 0-0 draw against local rivals South Antrim where they were unable to convert possession into goals, but soon got into their stride beating Mossley 7-0 in the next match. Alex Nye scored the first hat-trick of the day against Mossley. Raphoe were then beaten 4-0 and a talented Annadale team 2-0. The R&P and Harlequins teams both went down 4-0 before two tougher matches against Armagh and Cookstown. The Armagh side were beaten 3-0 after another strong display from the Garvey midfield. Cookstown were next up and although it took the boys a while to settle they ran out 2-0 winners. The final group match was a 2-0 victory against our own Hillsborough side where debutant goalkeeper Robbie Collim was the star of the show for the Hillsborough team. The match between the top two sides for the silverware was a repeat of the opening match with Garvey facing South Antrim. Garvey again made most of the running with the excellent South goalkeeper saving several good shots. The Garvey midfield were keeping the ball and probing for openings with the defence alert to the danger of a sudden breakaway. In the end, one goal decided the match. A through ball from Sean Murray was picked up by Ryan Getty who drew the goalkeeper before neatly passing to Aaron Martin for the simplest of finishes. Top scorer was forward Aaron Martin with 13 goals during the days matches but the midfield trio of Ryan Getty, Sean Murray and Alex Nye also bagged their fair share. In tournament hockey it is just as important not to concede soft goals and the defensive unit of Mark McNellis, Darryl Scott, Thomas Mathewson and Thomas Logan performed very well not to concede any goals and contribute to the team effort going forward. Special mention must also be made of P6 player Craig Getty who scored 4 times. This finishes an excellent season for the U12’s who remained undefeated for the entire 2008-2009 season.
