Men's 1st XI qualify for next year's IHL
04 May 2009
Lisnagarvey Men's 1st XI travelled to Dublin this weekend with the sole purpose of qualifying for next season's Irish Hockey League. They got their chance by virtue of the ‘wild card’ playoff tournament at Grange Road and a 6-0 victory over Bandon meant they have retained their place in the top flight of Irish hockey next season.
Saturday's game against Dublin Corinthians was their hardest task and after holding a 2-1 advantage they slipped away and lost disappointingly by 4 goals to 2.
Their approach to the match was badly upset when Jason Lynch became ill in the ‘warm up’ and had to be taken to the local hospital for observation. Thankfully he recovered sufficiently to go back to his home in Cork and everyone at Lisnagarvey club hope he will make a full recovery.
After a delayed start, Garvey held the balance of play and forced their opening penalty corner in the 13th minute but Timmy Cockram's drag flick was well saved by keeper Murray.
The 19th minute saw Corinthians take the lead somewhat against the run of play. David Carson was given too much room in the circle and he reverse shot past Davey Williamson from 12 yards.
Garvey responded immediately with a goal from the stick of Mark Robinson operating in a forward position and Garvey had enough of the ball to manage a second goal but they showed a lack of penetration and went in at the half time stage with the score at
1-1.
Following good work from skipper Mark Raphael, Robinson picked up his second goal shortly after the interval and Garvey looked to be on top of the match. However, after a very disputed penalty corner decision, Corinthians equalised with a very fast drag flick from Brian Doherty and Garvey suddenly had it all to do with 25 minutes remaining.
Brian Waring took Corinthians second penalty corner off the goal line but in the 57th minute, Karl Eggart worked his way along the bye line and scored from a very narrow angle and despite two more Garvey penalty corners which were wasted, Corinthians were the more likely to score and they completely ruined Garvey's day with a ‘killer’ fourth goal in the 65th minute through Carson, leaving Garvey having to beat Cork representatives Bandon to take the last place in the 12 teams strong Irish Hockey League.
Sunday saw Garvey facing the ‘crunch’ match of their season and they rose to the occasion beating the rather weak Bandon team by 6 goals to nil.
The Cork team did not recover from John Gray's twenty second goal and a second from a Timmy Cockram penalty corner almost sealed the result by half time.
Further goals from Mark Raphael with a reverse stick effort, Timmy Cockram [2] and Glenn Whitten finished off the Cork challenge.
Next Saturday 9th May, Garvey approach the end of their long season with an Anderson Cup semi final game against Instonians at Havelock Park, Banbridge. If they manage a win they will face the winners of Banbridge and Cookstown in the final also at Havelock Park the next day Sunday 10th May at 3-00 p.m.
