Garvey Boys Under 13’s are Ulster Champions

Lisnagarvey under 13’s won the Ulster Cup in dramatic fashion, beating Cookstown 4 – 2 in a new, European Hockey League style, penalty shoot-out. The teams could not be separated after normal or extra-time with the score locked at 0 – 0. Garvey who had the better of the play throughout the match, failed to convert any of the chances that they created into goals. The team performed well both in normal and extra time with the whole squad contributing well. The new penalty shoot-out rules involve the attacking player attempting to beat the goalkeeper “one-on-one” from the 22 metre line within 10 seconds. 5 courageous Garvey players volunteered to take them, and penalties were scored by Sean Murray, Jack Henderson and Matthew Sullivan with Jack Wilson scoring to win the cup. Throughout the shoot-out Garvey keeper Nathan Moore was exceptional, twice making excellent saves from Cookstown Players. Cookstown provided excellent opposition and were by far the best side Garvey have faced this season playing a full part in what was an excellent match, played in a spirit of sportsmanship. Garvey’s cup win was just rewards for an excellent unbeaten season and one which saw Garvey score 24 goals and concede just one.

Man of the match was Garvey vice-captain Jack Henderson who displayed all the qualities of a top midfield player with his vision, passing, work rate and energy all adding up to a sensational performance. The coaching staff would like to thank all the players for their commitment and hard work throughout the season.

The Lisnagarvey squad was as follows: Nathan Moore; Jonny Wilson; Bruce Lawson; Marty Bothwell; David Morris; Sean Murray; Matthew Sullivan (Captain); Jack Henderson (Vice-Captain); Curtis Moorehead; Jack Wilson; Travis Moorehead: Mark McNellis; Mark Acheson; Josh Alderdice; Aaron Martin; Thomas Matheson.
